The ROI of Unconsciousness
We obsess over "hustle." We optimize our waking hours. But the engine of cognitive performance is built in the dark.
I correlated 90 days of my Oura Ring sleep stages with my WakaTime coding metrics. The hypothesis: Deep Sleep duration directly predicts "Deep Work" capability the next day.
The Data
- Metric A: Deep Sleep (Minutes)
- Metric B: High-Impact Coding (Hours)
- Constraint: Alcohol intake = 0 (Constant).
Experiment: Want to visualize this correlation with your own data? Initialize your OS and start tracking your sleep metrics today.
The Findings
The correlation wasn't linear; it was exponential. For more on how chemical intake affects this, see my analysis on The Truth About Caffeine.
- < 45m Deep Sleep: My code output was "maintenance mode." Bug fixes, emails, Slack.
- > 90m Deep Sleep: I entered flow state 40% faster. Total Deep Work duration increased by 2.5 hours on average.
The Protocol
- Temperature: Bedroom at 18°C.
- Light: No blue light 2 hours before bed.
- Fast: No calories 3 hours before bed.
If you are writing code on 4 hours of sleep, you are not a hero. You are a liability. Optimize your recovery to maximize your lethality.
